pipistock SUBMISSION GUIDE
Camera specs: Minimum 10MP digital camera. Preferably DSLR with RAW capability
Images must be JPEG file format and RGB colour space only (any other formats will be automatically declined). If possible, shoot in RAW format and covert your images to JPEGs using dedicated image processing software – it’ll do a much better job at compressing your images than your camera does and you’ll end up with more detail, larger JPEG file sizes and fewer compression artifacts. Be sure to set the compression quality to the maximum available before converting to JPEG (e.g. Level 12 in Photoshop). TIP: To avoid unnecessary compression artifacts and/or losing detail unnecessarily, process your images in a lossless format (e.g. 8bit TIFF) before doing a last-minute conversion to JPEG and uploading them.
Minimum image size (pixel x pixel): The bigger, the better. All images need to be at least 2560 x 1700 pixels. Anything smaller will be automatically rejected. By meeting this minimum requirement we will be able to sell your images in large, medium and small sizes. If you can supply us with larger sizes (pixel x pixel), then we may be able to sell them as XL images.
Image file size (MB): Although the file size (in MB) of your JPEGs will vary depending on content, you should aim for 3+MB. Using a DSLR camera, shooting in RAW, processing as TIFFs (or similar lossless format), then last minute conversion to JPEGs should easily get your images within this range
Don’t invent pixels - no uprezzing/upsampling! pipistock does not accept uprezzed/upsampled/interpolated files (images where the pixel dimensions have been increased to be larger than the file’s native size). Uprezzing reduces image detail and sharpness – at 100% images look ‘soft’ or ‘blurry’ due to lack of detail. Supply your largest NATIVE image size and leave the choice of uprezzing to the customer.
NO scanned images: All images originally shot on a digital camera (10MP or higher)
Quality images: We only accept high quality images. Please check your images carefully at 100% zoom for quality defects such as poor exposure and focus, colour cast, lens dust and scratches, noise and compression artifacts.
Pure NZ and Exclusive: All images supplied to pipistock are to be shot in New Zealand and provided exclusive to pipistock.co.nz (i.e. not available via any other photo library).
You must own the full copyright to any image you upload. This means you must be the original artist (photographer). If you do not have complete rights to the image, do not submit it
Model Releases: images with identifiable people require a signed model release form. A pipistock Model Release form is available for download from the Site or you may use an alternative. Children can’t sign a model release form so a legal guardian or parent must sign for all models under the age of 18 years. It is your responsibility to obtain a valid and binding Model Release(s) to permit the uses described under the pipistock Content Licence Agreement. During the upload process you will be asked to confirm whether you have obtained a Model Release. If you falsely declare that you have obtained a model release then you may be suspended.
Nudies: pipistock is not that keen on nudies and the decision to accept or reject an image containing nudity will be made at the sole discretion of pipistock. Never submit ‘glamour’ photos or explicit material. Partial nudity in context may be acceptable. Submissions must not contain violence, x-rated content, or any illegal content.
Remove trademarks and logos: This includes any trademarks, logos, brand names, company names, or other entities with trademarked or copyrighted elements. An exception may be made when trademarks, logos, etc are incidental to the subject, and the trademarks, logos etc are not a prominent feature e.g. a cityscape featuring multiple high-rise buildings with incidental trademarks and logos. Images where trademarks, logos, etc are an integral part of the composition or images containing prominent trademarks, logos, etc are not acceptable.
No images of patented or trademarked products: pipistock does not accept images of identifiable modern toys, computers, MP3 players or other licensed products. This is about recognisable designs which may be subject to a patent or trademark. While branded products and unique designs are a no-go, mass-produced and/or generic products may be acceptable.
Cars: pipistock does not accept images of cars with visible brand names, model names or logos. pipistock also declines images where the car is the main subject and the brand or model is identifiable. pipistock does accept partial shots of cars, and images of cars as the main subject at certain angles or in certain contexts, where the brand and model is unidentifiable. pipistock also accepts street shots containing several cars.
Text: Modern maps, newspapers, books, computer screens (interfaces and icons), and other forms of text are subject to copyright. Hence images with text that is more than partially visible are not acceptable. pipistock also rejects any images featuring elements which would clearly identify a specific publication e.g. artwork, photographs, book titles, newspaper names, logos, etc. These would need to be removed to make an image acceptable. Images which include a portion of non-identifiable text are OK.
No images of other artwork: Works of art are subject to copyright and include paintings, sculptures, any object in an art gallery or museum, advertisements or other photos. The only exclusion is a work of sculpture that is permanently situated in a public place. This exclusion does not apply to other works of art (e.g. photos, drawings, paintings, etc) nor does it apply to sculpture which is temporarily situated in a public place.

Property Releases: photography law relating to property in NZ has quite a few grey areas. If you’re on public property you can theoretically photograph any property you can see – public or private. However for images of private property, and particularly for private property that can be closely associated with specific people, you’re much better off getting a Property Release. pipistock requires a Property Release for images of private property that might sensibly lead to the identification of the owner. The more recognisable and unique the property and/or the higher the profile of the owner, the greater the need for a Property Release. The theory behind this is that images of a person’s property could be used to defame the owner by association. Remember that property isn’t necessarily restricted to buildings but could include pets and cars for example. Note: if you need to step onto private property to photograph a subject then you will definitely need permission of the property owner otherwise you’re trespassing! A pipistock Property Release form is available for download from the Site or you may use an alternative. A Property Release needs to be signed by the legal and beneficial owner(s) of the property or their authorised agent. It is your responsibility to obtain a valid and binding Property Release to permit the uses described under the pipistock Content Licence Agreement. During the upload process you will be asked to confirm whether you have obtained a Property Release. If you falsely declare that you have obtained a Property Release then you may be suspended.
Military property: Although you may be standing on public property, photographing military property may present a security risk. At present, pipistock requires a Property Release for all military property including RNZAF aircraft, RNZN vessels, NZ Army vehicles, and all military bases and buildings.
Museums, sporting and entertainment venues: (both interior and exterior) are required to have a Property Release. This is another ‘grey area’ but we are increasingly seeing venues that charge admission fees requiring special permission for commercial photography. It’s fairly common overseas and the Auckland Museum, for example, now requires permission too. If in doubt, ask.
Description and Keywords: Keep descriptions short and sweet but be sure to include your most important 2 – 3 keywords. Keyword your images carefully as these are how customers find your images. Make sure your keywords relate directly to your image and try to think like a customer: what words would you use to search for the image? Where applicable include the key: items/objects, actions, colours, location, shapes, feelings, gender, age, weather, season, time, concept. Put your most important/relevant keywords first to increase the ranking of your image in the search results. Only use single words: avoid hyphenated words and do not use sentences or strings of words. Separate your keywords with a semi-colon (;) but no space e.g. beach;summer;swim;sun. Images with careful, descriptive and accurate keywording get downloaded more often = more $$ for you! But submissions that have poor keywording or spam keywording (including keywords that only have a tenuous connection to the subject) are likely to be rejected.
Do not embed your own watermark, copyright or other notice: We protect your images with our pipistock watermark which is applied when your image is accepted.

DO |
Read the Submission Guide. |
Consider your customers – do you have any? Does your image have value as a concept that customers could benefit from i.e. is it saleable? |
Consider your composition carefully: make sure your images have a clear topic and focus. |
Check your images at 100% before uploading them to make sure they are free of noise, compression artifacts, poor exposure or colour cast, focus faults or lens dust and scratches. |
Vary the subject matter of your submissions. |
Choose the correct category for your image – see Category Descriptions in the Photographers’ Area. This will make it easier for customers to find your images. |

DON'T |
No upsampling/uprezzing/interpolated images please – just send us your largest (pixel x pixel) native file. |
Don't frame or apply borders to your work. |
We don’t need snapshots so please don’t send any, and we don’t accept photos with heavy shadows from the onboard flash. |
Don’t send similar shots when only one is your favorite. Edit on your own and just send us your best. Keep any image series of the same subject to the bare minimum. |
Don't send the same image with slight variations on the angle. |
Don't send the same image in color, black and white, sepia, and blue tone. Color is enough. If any variation in color actually enhances the image, then you may submit it. |
Don't send flower pictures labeled "Flower" or "Spring Scene". We only accept photos of flowers that are labeled with the scientific or common name. Labeling plants and animals with their scientific names may increase your sales. |
Avoid sunsets, flowers, your pet, your toes and your navel – look further afield please. |
Don't submit photos with motion blur or artifacts from dirty windows e.g. taken from inside an airplane or moving vehicle.
